Read one of our climber’s experience with a travel clinic before leaving for Peru – August 8, 2008

Hello fellow Climbers,

We are 7 weeks away from our departure date. I hope by now you have consulted your family doctor or a travel clinic to find out what shots you need before going to Peru. If you haven’t booked your consultation, please do so ASAP and let them know you are departing on Sept 27.

Personally, I went to Medisys Toronto Travel Clinic (address below). They were extremely nice and accommodating. They open at 8:15am for those of you, like me, who need to book appointments before work.

First consultation, I got:

1st consultation – $45

Tetanus Diphtheria - since I had not had my shot in the past 10 years (free)

MMR – if you have not received your shot as a child (also free)

Typhoid – $40

Twinrix (Hep A&B) – did you know that once you are done your series of Twinrix, you are immune for life… cool. – $65

Rabies vaccines actually cost around $600, so since it is not mandatory for Peru, I did not get the shot. Obviously, they recommend staying away from animals to avoid getting bitten.

And they also prescribed me Diamox for altitude sickness, recommended Durokal (~$90) to prevent travellers’ diarrhea and prescribed antibiotics in case it happens during the trip.

They said to avoid: ice, unbottled beverages, unpasterised milk products, food from street vendors, anything that is not cooked especially salads and fruits that can’t be peeled.

Furthermore, they recommended to bring Imodium, Gravol and to only drink bottle of boiled water. You will find the same recommendation in your ”All You Need To Know For the MS Climb 2008″ booklet.

2nd & 3rd consultations were for my 2nd & 3rd shots or Twinrix

Twinrix (Hep A&B) – $65 each consultation

Consultation fee – $15 each

And in one year, I have to return for my final and last Twinrix booster.
