Tips for Traveling

We’ll be offering lots of tips for travelers in the climbers forums and as we get closer to the climbs, but for now here are some very important tips for avoiding one of the most common traveler complaints.

Avoiding Travellers’ Diarrhea (Ewww…)

  • Eat fruits and vegetables that are freshly peeled or freshly cooked.
  • Remember that travellers’ diarrhea can strike when you least expect it. It’s important to be prepared. Consider protecting yourself with immunization.
  • Don’t eat undercooked or raw meat, fish or shellfish. These can all be sources of bacteria that cause diarrhea.
  • Drink bottled water or bottled soft drinks, bottled fruit juices, alcoholic beverages without ice and hot beverages.
  • Drink pasteurized, properly refrigerated milk.
  • Brushing teeth should be done with purified/bottled water. If it’s not available, use hot tap water.
  • Even if you tend to be an adventurous traveller, don’t eat foods sold by street vendors – finding the nearest bathroom shouldn’t be part of the adventure!
  • Wash your hands carefully before eating or preparing food. Good hygiene helps prevent Travellers’ Diarrhea.
  • Talk to your healthcare professional about tips for avoiding travellers’ diarrhea in your specific destination.
  • Purifying water and eating well cooked foods will decrease your chances of suffering from Travellers’ Diarrhea.
  • Even first class hotels and exclusive resorts are no guarantee that food and water are safe.
